Error Mouting Filesystems

I get the following error when attempting to install 10.10 on an old computer with brand new 500gb hard drive and 768mb of ram and a pentium 4 processor.

"General error mounting filesystems.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system.
bash: /root/.bashrc: Input/output error"

and then "root@ubuntu:~# _"

I am an absolute noob at anything linux. I just recently got this computer and put the new hard drive in it, then attempted to install Ubuntu from a DVD. I'm not sure what's wrong. Any help at all would be appreciated. I'd hate to have bought a new hard drive for no reason... :/

I feel like there is a problem with your DVD. Check the ISO image's integrity first.

If ok, check your DVD for defects.

It is better to use a CD or USB instead of DVD. DVDs are know to cause a few problems on a number of occasions.

I installed 10.04 from a CD. I guess I won't know if it was the image or the DVD. Oh well, works alright now. Thanks.
