Like some others on this forum I have been tolerating very slow saving of Open Office documents. Saves which take less than a second in WinXP were taking up to 10 seconds on my perfectly adequate system.
A few days ago I seriously wounded that system by inadvertently allowing Ubuntu to update the video driver. After this my system would boot only to a command line. I have now fixed that, by installing the correct driver and hand crafting xorg.conf. Now I find that Open Office saves are faster by a factor of 10 or more and there is also a noticeable improvement in saving from all other applications too.
Don't ask me what I did - I have no idea, but there's obviously something in the op. sys. which is causing appln. saves to be slow (or quick).
It's just an observation.
