Hi

Getting the Ubuntu bug..! :P

I'd like to try a dual boot installation on my laptop. Currently running XP Pro fine, although hard disk read/writes seems a little sluggish these days. It used to be a high spec laptop in it's day:

Toshiba Portege R200
Pentium M753 1.2gHz ULV
1.2gb RAM
12" screen

Would I be ok installing the regular Ubuntu desktop to this?

Usage would be general browsing, VPN/TS to Windows desktop pc & hopefully VPN to exchange server for email.

I would recommend 10.04 desktop edition for several reasons.
It's hardware support is better. It's installer is certainly easier to use and safer! It has long term support (3 years).

If you're asking if your machine has the resources (ram, cpu, etc) to run Ubuntu 10.04 the answer is "yes."

I run 10.04 desktop edition on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with roughly similar specs and it performs great.

On this particular laptop XP sp3 has definitely slowed down (as Windows tends to do over the years) but Ubu 10.04 has performed well. Prior to 10.04 I ran 8.04 on it for 2 years also with excellent results.

Just be sure to try the Ubuntu Live CD before installing, to ensure Ubuntu recognizes all your devices ok. I had to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to get my screen resolution the way I wanted it.

Cheers.

That sounds good, thank you.

Apart from the graphics, did you get any other driver issues? (Wireless etc.)
