Greetings

I am a pc user & would like to try Ubuntu.

I have an old Pentium III 600mHz 512mb RAM pc currently running XP & would like to try to resurrect it as a usable pc running Ubuntu or a variant.

After trying the main website & despite searching the forums (although not every page of the 3k that turned up), I can't find recommended processor specs anywhere other than Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(operating_system) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29)

Can anyone help please?

Regards
B

Wouldn't really recommend that. Even Lubuntu won't run well on my old p3 700 mHz. I use puppy Linux(MacPup) on it. Not a screaming multitasking monster mind you. It's at least serviceable.

Reviving an old machine can be rewarding but is always a challenge.
Though the kernel will happily work on most anything from a gumstick to the latest supercomputer the challenge is in application software.

Some desktops to try are Lubuntu (LXDE) Xubuntu (XFCE) Flubuntu (Fluxbox) Blackbox, Enlightenment, There are many others on freedesktop.org. They will get you on the web though 600 mhz won't play videos or music more than 128kbs. You can use the "alternate" install iso image to install apache webserver or lighthttp (there are many others) but these will more easily allow you to develop dynamic pages. without a "No execute" bit i would serve static pages.

Whatever you decide most applications for debian rely on the same libraries that Ubuntu uses and a light desktop starts to slow down after installing just a few apps.

So.. Minimal install alternate iso image add as few apps as you can manage to get the functionality you want and backup everything.

recently we got lot of Atom with few ram on the market; and they work with recent distro, so a P3/512 will work too (i have one running netbook remix)

There are requriements up here as well as wikipedia-

Pffft! to that. I've run bigger bitrate MP3s on slower systems than that.

I agree on DE though, if you wanted t run a *buntu on that a minimal install + Xfce, Lxde, openbox or fluxbox would be your best bet (lubuntu could work as well, but I've never compared a minimal install + lxde to lubuntu)

Atoms are faster than 600Mhz P3. Even the slowest of them.
