Hi and welcome to the forums :)

Use the LiveCD to boot the computer, choosing to try not install.

At the live desktop, download and run the boot info script linked at the bottom of my post (instructions included).

Post the results back here so we can get a better overview of your current setup.

Thanks.

For some reason, GRUB has not been installed to the MBR of the drive. The partition boot files seem to be okay.

Here is what you need to do:

From a LiveCD, reinstall GRUB. I am assuming sda is set as first device (if not change the command to use sdb).

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda

Run
sudo update-grub back in Ubuntu to pick up the Windows install.

If you need more help, let me know.

i can manually select and mount sda5
but not with the command you told
tried few things and this is what i got
---------------------

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda5/mnt
mount: can't find /dev/sda5/mnt in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo grub-install --root directory=mnt//dev/sda
Unrecognized option `--root'
Usage: grub-install [OPTION] install_device
Install GRUB on your drive.

-h, --help print this message and exit
-v, --version print the version information and exit
--modules=MODULES pre-load specified modules MODULES
--root-directory=DIR install GRUB images under the directory DIR
instead of the root directory
--grub-setup=FILE use FILE as grub-setup
--grub-mkimage=FILE use FILE as grub-mkimage
--grub-probe=FILE use FILE as grub-probe
--no-floppy do not probe any floppy drive
--recheck probe a device map even if it already exists
--force install even if problems are detected
--disk-module=MODULE disk module to use

INSTALL_DEVICE can be a GRUB device name or a system device filename.

grub-install copies GRUB images into /boot/grub (or /grub on NetBSD and
OpenBSD), and uses grub-setup to install grub into the boot sector.

If the --root-directory option is used, then grub-install will copy
images into the operating system installation rooted at that directory.

Report bugs to <bug-grub@gnu.org>.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo update grub

bash: /dev/sda5/mnt: Not a directory

---------------
should i go for reformat and reinstall ?

spaces are just as important as any character in Linux. You have missed a space in the first command. There should be a space betweeen /dev/sda5 and /mnt It is better to copy/paste the commands given in to your terminal screen one at a time, pressing enter after each line.

ppm123
January 13th, 2011, 11:13 AM
as per the advise, tried again to do it, and this is what what i got
===============

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
mount: /dev/sda5 already mounted or /mnt busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda5 is already mounted on /mnt
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
Installation finished. No error reported.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo update-grub
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$
==========================
now what do i do?

Reboot and, hopefully, Ubuntu will boot up. If it does, open a terminal and run
sudo update-grub which should then pick up your Windows installation on sda1. If it does, reboot and you should have a grub menu with the choice of operating system to boot from.

success,
after carefully pasting the commands , as advised with correct spacing, something did happen right
and on rebooting i did see, the long expected dual boot screen.

now can ask one more query?
i use my windows part to write in indian language-particularly marathi(with devnagari script)
earlier i was using a regional software ==lipik== with true type fonts such as lpk-marathi

later on started using microsoft indic language input tool
can i install some indian language fonts in ubuntu? so i can read/write using these indian fonts?

You can ask as many questions as you want :-)
Glad you got the original problems sorted out!
I don't know the answer to your current question, but there are many on here who may do :-) Hopefully somebody will be along shortly.

Glad things worked out for you with reinstalling GRUB.

I have not done this, but I assume it will work for installing the fonts you want:
