View Full Version : [SOLVED] No monitor with NVIDIA driver

I almost got my new install of mythbuntu 10.10 working on a Dell P4 with NVIDIA video PCIE. It was working for about 10 minutes into a show with the installed open source graphics driver. After about 10 minutes the screen froze and the only way to reboot the system was ssh with another networked pc. I went into /var/log/mythtv/mythfrontend.log and saw that there was a video buffering error during the "freeze".

So, I decided that I should try the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver which was available from the mythbuntu repo. I installed and when it rebooted could not detect my monitor (I have no TV). The computer is running fine as I can still ssh into my system...but that's all CLI so I have no idea of how to remove the NVIDIA driver or fix my freezing problem.

I never had this happen in 10.04 on the same computer setup using the NVIDIA proprietary driver.

EDIT:

Oh, there is no xorg.conf in /etc/X11 to just comment out the NVIDIA settings.

There isnt an xorg.conf file created by default anymore. But if you have one it will use it. If you have your config file from before you can try to use it.

Also, look in /var/log/kern.log for any other error msgs related to lack of memory. When I upgraded t 10.10 I had to allocate more memory at boot time for my nvidia driver. There was a msg in kern.log about it.

This info needs to be collected after installing nvidia driver & restarting the X server.

I found that there was an xorg.conf file on my 10.04 install. I copied this to my 10.10 and then had to comment out loading the nvidia module and put in the nv module. Now I have video and am waiting for it to freeze...it's been smooth for 15 minutes!

looks like that xorg.conf worked as tv was good for an hour. I then messed around with xorg.conf and found that I kept losing my monitor whenever I re-enabled nvidia but I was able to add this to the top of xorg.conf and then use nv as above:

This monitor is a 1920x1080 native res.

The VGA input will only allow up to 1680x1050 (at 60Hz only)
I strongly suggest you should use the HDMI-DVI cable that comes with the monitor.

The nvidia driver Xorg.0.log looked fine , it found the monitor & selected a video mode.
You should have changed to the max VGA res in nvidia-settings & saved it back to xorg.conf file.

The nvidia driver loaded glx module automatically. It does not need to be in the xorg.conf file. Neither does the keyboard & mouse input devices stuff.

So use nvidia driver & DVI-HDMI cable, set output resolution to 1920x1080p60 (US).
Then problem solved.

This monitor will have vertical refresh limits of 50 to 60 Hz with HDMI only.

My picture is really clear with the VGA cable. I have a Roku box plugged in with a HDMI-DVI cable on the same monitor to stream Netflix movies and it looks just as clear as the VGA TV.

My video card doesn't have the HDMI input, so I would have to split the DVI signal some how and then buy another cable that has DVI from the monitor and then DVI on the video card or S video.

Can the picture get clearer than what I see on my Roku box that is hooked into the DVI already...this looks as clear as the VGA mythbuntu?

The only streamed TV video I have watched (missed an episode) would put me off using it for anything.

Never seen Roku or netflix sorry.

IMO You are not going to have the best mythbuntu experience without nvidia vdpau especially with H264 material.
Cheap monitors do not have good pre-scalers etc.

Was just making sure you knew what the consequences of the connection type & video driver were.

If you're happy then that's great.

I'll look into my wiring scheme-some kind of switching box with a knob would that would split my monitor's DVI would make switching between mythbuntu and my Roku a lot easier than it is now and it'll probably look better too!

I noticed a bunch of errors in my xorg log file and then mythfrontend started closing on it's own. I then went into system and clicked on Additional Drivers again. It wanted to download the nvidia drivers again. The recommended drivers I had chosen weren't working so I chose version 173 instead and those seem to be working as most of the errors in my xorg log file are gone and my monitor doesn't lose a signal on reboot.

It looks like there's an error with the recommended nvidia drivers with a monitor.

The nvidia driver in 10.04 are very old.
Most people are using 256 or 260 if it does not cause regressions...
There are 3rd party ppa with easy install drivers ? i.e. pre-compiled & using dkms.

interesting! The recommended nvidia driver for 10.10 doesn't work on my system with just a monitor (the monitor looses it's signal) but I found that I can specify driver nvidia in xorg.conf with version 173 which is pretty old it sounds like. I'll look into getting a more recent nvidia driver that works with a monitor using your link.

Possibly with HDMI or HDMI audio devices.

I thought you were using 10.04 ?
I'm using 260.29.19 with 10.04 & 10.10 64 bit. Both no problems.

BUT I get my nvidia driver (pre-compiled packaged) from a MythTV ppa for convenience.

I have 10.04 and 10.10. My hard drive has 3 partitions...two 10 GB slices for mythbuntu installs and a 230 GB slice where I put recordings. I've been using mythbuntu 10.04 for the last 6 months or so on sda1 and did another install of mythbuntu 10.10 on sda2. All my recordings and backups go to sda3 so that I don't lose them.

which ppa do you use?

I have seen comments that with 10.10 you have to blacklist the open source nouveau driver in the initrd, otherwise it loads on boot and the nvidia driver is locked out, or something like that.

Our ozzie friend over the ditch. I'm not sure how he feels about people downloading the nvidia driver ..so I do not advertise it.
Very tidy & convenient using package management for this.
The ubuntu-x team ppa is available but the lucid version is 173 ?
Maverick is up to date tho'.

If the nouveau kernel module is loaded it stops nvidia loading hence the blacklist
added at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
# allow nVidia kernel driver
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivatv

For me, this was not necessity on all machines.

Vaguely recall adding something to blacklist-framebuffer.conf as well for good measure.
