OK, I've asked this on several other forums. Music, tech and even Yahoo answers, but no one seems to know what sad means. I keep getting this up-beat folk music that's driving me so crazy I can pull my hair out. Danny Boy is too cryptic for my tastes. I like cryptic, but not in Music. It drives me nuts.

**EDIT: and I wasn't talking about here ForrestCupp

You didn't ask anything.

How about something like this? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4MXO3f5FEU)

The only one I know is about an Irishman who's run out of booze.

However, it's a very short song because he only had time to write one stanza and one refrain before heading to the local store to restock.

Have a listen to some Clanad (http://ckuik.com/Clannad). Not to everybody's taste, but can certainly be sad, and is definitely Irish.

According to "The Internet (Links provided by Google)" Danny Boy isn't even Irish. Most Irish people have no idea what Danny Boy is when they come to the USA.

Off-topic..sort of. I hate the 'celtic' tag. The Irish are Gaels (along with the manx and scots..BTW, 'scot' was once interchangeable with 'irish').

Dont forget Enya. ;) Not that I find Enya sad, but my taste is a bit mixed up by most peoples standards.

Have heard a lot of Enya's and Celtic Women.

Q: Aren't the Irish and Scots kind of at each other's throats?

Not as far as I know, but hey, I dont live in Scotland or Ireland.

I *think* that an excpetion would be the 'ulster scots', but that is soci-ecconomic and historical in backgound......and probably far to much of a political minefield to be discussed here.

Gael is just more specific than Celt.

Gael is just more specific than Celt.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celts

Which is exactly why I used it.

'Celt' is from the Galli (Gaulic), who called themsleves 'Celtae'. Just in what went on to become modern France, there were the (in latin) the Galli, the Belgae (unknown language group, possibly a 'celtic' language, possibly germanic, possinly a blend of the 2) and the Aquitani (again, unknown, but could be celtic langague group or basque or a blend) (see 'the gallic wars' by Julis Ceasar).

That is leaving out Narbonensis (Transalpine Gaul), who probably did speak proto-celtic, but with an unknown amount of Phonecian and Greek influence. As for why its left out.....the Romans already conquered Narbonensis, and since Ceasar wrote 'The Gallic Wars' as a bit of self-promotion and propaganda, it was pointless to put it in (and this is also why Ceasar cant be trusted on the Gauls)

To lump all the tribal groups together on some tenuous langage connections isnt logical. Its done mainly because of the romticisation of the very term 'Celt'.

I find the who idea of Scots, Irish and Manx (and for that matter, Brythonic speakers as well like the Welsh, Beton and Cornish) calling themselves 'Celtic' would be like England, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Holland etc calling themselves 'Burgundians'.

But the real question is this. Is it properly pronounced "Seltic" or "Keltic"? ;)

Please try to keep this thread on topic.

I fear it is drifting away from the music :guitar:

Try Capercaille. She sings both traditional Scottish songs and songs in English. Some of them are those upbeat folky sort you don`t seem to like. Others are incredibly beautiful. This is, perhaps their most famous song. I`ve got no idea what she is singing about, but with a voice like that I don`t suppose it matters.

I like this one. Strong vocals, strong music. sad tune. The only thing I can think about which is missing from the equation is English and uplifting lyrics (Due to the fact that I don't understand it I don't know if they are or not.)

This is the best one I've heard :-)

I usually listen to scotch gaelic music, but I am glad you liked this one.
