Hi All,

I upgraded my dell inspiron 6000 from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 then rebooted and now I am stuck at the grub prompt.
I am able to boot from a flash drive and have run the boot script.

This laptop did not have a dual boot system on it but it did have windows on it at one time, converted to ubuntu.
hopefully someone can help.

I don't see anything wrong with your boot script output. I would suggest that you re-install grub by using the following commands from the Ubuntu Live cd/usb desktop. Please copy/paste them into a terminal window one at a time, pressing enter after each line.

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
If these commands run without any error please reboot and see if Ubuntu boots ok.

Not sure if this is problem or not but Quackers reinstall grub is the correct solution.

No drive shown? (hd0,msdos1) is more typical.

partition #1 for (,msdos1)/boot/grub.

Nevermind, I just reran my boot script on my portable and it is identical. No drive shown.

Quackers,

thanks for your help, I've already tried to reinstall grub and still get the grub prompt. I also did a complete install from my flash drive and nothing still.
Any other ideas?

I take it that you are using a live usb (the one that is plugged in on the boot script). Has that usb been unplugged since you ran the boot script? What can sometimes happen is that when it is reconnected, it can become sda, rather than sdb. In that case your are effectively re-installing grub to the flash drive, rather than your hard drive. Could you re-run the boot script, but leave the flash drive plugged in (if it still is), thanks.

In order for me to do so I would need to boot from grub, I had a list of the commands that I would need for that but have lost it if you could refresh my memory it would be helpfull. I am writing from the laptop at the same time while tring to do this, so that why my replys are not speedy.

Boot from the flash drive and select "try ubuntu".
When you are getting the grub prompt, is the flash drive plugged in or not plugged in?

Quackers,

Ok I just tried this at the grub prompt but did not work

set prefix=(hd0,0) /boot/grub
set root=(hd0,0)
insmod /boot/grub/linux.mod
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot

railman

No the flash drive is not plugged in when I get the grub prompt.

I have never booted from the grub prompt so am unsure. I would say that I'm sure your (hd0,0)'s should be (hd0,1)'s, but as for the rest I can have a mooch about :-)

Your close this is the correct set of commands using the tab to finish.

Manual boot from grub prompt for grub2
set root=(hd0,X) X=the partition # of OS
linux /boot/vmlinuz(tab=kernel) root=/dev/sdaX
initrd /boot/initrd(tab, then enter)
boot (enter)

You will have to try it Quackers if you ever get stuck it is empowering.:)

Thanks wilee-nilee for that :-) Fortunately, I've never needed that info, but I'll bookmark it for future reference :-)

I got it from the dr I think I forget now. That and a super grub disc will keep you going, when the going gets tough. I had a maverick set up that no matter how many times I reloaded grub all I got was a black screen a couple months back, supergrub to the rescue.:)

wilee-nilee
January 11th, 2011, 01:51 AM
Ok I will try that and I'll get back in a few minutes.

If you tab on the second line and the kernel doesn't popup the first line is wrong, your first one was.
set root=(hd0,0) should have been set root=(hd0,X) X=the partition.

The third line initrd /boot/initrd(tab, then enter) the tab just kicks it to work nothing appears, may work without the tab on this line not sure.

You can also try a supergrub disc use the one in the middle.
http://www.supergrubdisk.org/
Once in run in the terminal just to be safe
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
then
sudo update-grub

Your manual login would look like this.
Manual boot from grub prompt for grub2
set root=(hd0,1) X=the partition # of OS
linux /boot/vmlinuz(tab=kernel) root=/dev/sda1
initrd /boot/initrd(tab, then enter)
boot (enter)

So each line needs a enter hit.

Your files seem to be there. Give it one more shot. The first two commands aren't required but won't hurt either:

set prefix=(hd0,1)/boot/grub
set root=(hd0,1)
insmod linux (hd0,1)/boot/grub/linux.mod
linux (hd0,1)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd (hd0,1)/initrd.img
boot

If you get any errors, barring a typo, you can stop...

I know when I tried the manual boot it took about 30 tries to get it correct. You might consider the supergrub option, if it is bootable it should get you in.

Is this a western digital HD perchance, some have firmware that can't be removed and basically I believe wont run Linux without the firmware updated and hidden in windows setup.

This may be the culprit hard to say, yours is 250 gigs.

I don't remember what drive brand I have installed, But I'll check.
Going to try the supergrub for now, I'll be back.

thanks

I don't remember what drive brand I have installed, But I'll check. I replaced the drive about two years ago, so it's not the one that came with the laptop.
Going to try the supergrub for now, I'll be back.

Since it ran Lucid it seems unlikely that the HD is the problem but it seemed worth mentioning. The supergrub disc will tell though whether you can get in the way it is set up now.
