View Full Version : [ubuntu] Grub Problems

Hi

I am hoping somebody can help me please!

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which was configured to Dual Boot Windows Vista and Ubuntu.

Tonight I inserted a USB Disk with an image of Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook installed on it and booted from it.

I then tried to install a copy of Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition on a second USB disk.

On completion I removed both USB disks and rebooted my Dell laptop to be greeted with the following message.

"error: no such device: fff8e559-d9fd-9e82-2dce7f438007
grub rescue>"

If I plug the USB disk back in that I installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on and reboot I am presented with a Grub boot menu and I can load Vista or Ubuntu that was originally installed on the HDD of my laptop.

Can anybody advise me how to edit the grub menu so that I can boot to Vista or Ubuntu on my HDD without having to have a USB device attached?

Many thanks.

From the Ubuntu desktop please go to the site below and download the boot script to your DESKTOP and then open up a terminal and run

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

This will produce a results.txt file on your desktop. Please copy the contents of that file and paste them in your next post between CODE tags. For CODE tags click on New Reply (not quick reply) and then click on the # symbol in the toolbar.
This will give a full overview of your current system.
Thanks.

Did you run the script from an older liveCD? It says it cannot see ext4 partitions and Ubuntu since 9.04 has worked with ext4.

Script did not output all of the info on the linux partitions.

But grub says it is trying to boot from sda1 but the linux partition is sda6.

I would first try to reinstall grub to the MBR. But you will need a newer liveCd so it can read the ext4 partition.

#Comments are anything after the #, enter commands in terminal session
#Install MBR from LiveCD, Ubuntu install on sda6 and want grub2 in drive sda's MBR:
#Find linux partition, change sda6 if not correct:
sudo fdisk -l
#confirm that linux is sda6
sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
#If that returns any errors run:
sudo grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
# After rebooting into working system
sudo update-grub

#Install MBR from LiveCD, Ubuntu install on sda6 and want grub2 in drive sda's MBR:
#Find linux partition, change sda6 if not correct:
sudo fdisk -l
#confirm that linux is sda6
sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
#If that returns any errors run:
sudo grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
# After rebooting into working system
sudo update-grub
