Can i place a some cool shortcuts to different application on my desktop. How can I get these cool looking shortcuts. I also want to know that can I put some Gadgets on desktop like gadgets in Windows 7.

It is possible to drag & drop application & folder icons to desktop , how they look depends on your icon theme. You can also create custom launchers by right clicking the desktop , which you can use custom icons of your choice that you have downloaded.

You can install Ubuntu Tweak to install, tweak desktop settings.
In the Application Center of Ubuntu Tweak click on Desktop to see some things to install. Also on the left plane look at the settings you can change.
