Is Xubuntu better for media on an older system? The reason I ask is because I have an older ThinkPad running Ubuntu 10.04 that I'm using to watch videos on. On the regular laptop screen, it works great. When I plug in my 46 inch TV, however, the video gets choppy. I know this is because of the video card, etc., but I'm wondering if Xubuntu would lessen the load enough to enable smooth video playback on the big TV?

Probably not.

The issue you are probably having is sheer number of pixels. Newer TVs use 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution, and it puts a lot more strain on the GPU (or intel video) than 1024x786 or 1280x1024 resolutions.

Yeah, I figured it was a hardware issue. Anyone have any idea what I can do, besides getting a newer laptop?
The lower 16:9 setting almost works, but the top panel is completely off the screen.
