View Full Version : [ubuntu] Boot device

I want to install ubuntu 10.10 on my old laptop. I try to do this by usb stick, i came to the blue window boot device, there are 4 options to choose: Hard disk, cd-rom/dvd, floppy disk and lan boot. I tried all of them, but nothing happend. What schould i do? thanks for answers..

Hi and welcome to the forums :-)

Not all computers support booting from the USB drive, especially older models.

In your case, it would appear this is not an option.

Burn a CD and install that way would be my suggestion.

Burn your disk at the slowest speed for best results.

Plop boot manager may allow your old laptop to boot USB.

Some BIOS see flash drives as just another hard drive in which case the flash drive should be set as first hard drive.

I tried it with a cd but it doesnt work, i think my cd reader ist damaged! If the usb thing would work, should there be on the boot devices an option usb to choose next to the four others?

It depends on the BIOS.

Another option is to stick your hard drive in another computer and install to it there.

How much RAM in the laptop, I think you require 500MB for Ubuntu.
