It was probably 2007 when my friend gave me a Ubuntu CD . I pop in it while running windows XP it had anti virus for windows which I installed .

I installed the Ubuntu and did not really liked it . It was quite bland (brown is most dull color you can think of )

At that time I had no idea of Linux philosophy and how customizable it is so I uninstalled and never returned until early 2010 .

Now I wonder what version he gave to me and what anti virus was that ...???

I don't know of any anti-virus which comes pre installed in Ubuntu

But There is clamAV which can be added via the software centre or synaptic
clamAV is a CLI based anti virus so you may want to consider installing clamTK with it, this is the GUI front end for clamAV

I am not looking for an anti virus . I am just curious about what was the version of Ubuntu he gave me . And that anti virus was for windows not for Ubuntu .

(The CD was official CD sent by canonoical not burnt by him )

I am not aware of clam or anything else every being installed by default in Ubuntu-Desktop. As far as I know it is not in Ubuntu Server either.

the CD might have been from the OpenDisc (http://www.theopendisc.com/) project. The OpenCD Project aims to showcase OpenSource and Free software to Windows users. It contains many programs such as Firefox, Pidgin, gimp, etc. It also includes the antivirus ClamWin.

You friend might have also given you a Ubuntu Dekstop CD which apart from letting you use it as a LiveCD and install the OS, it also contains a limited number of Windows application for those who are afraid to dive into the water.

You can use either Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/), Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org/), or Edubuntu (http://edubuntu.org/)

well, i think ubuntu distro in 2007 is already in a good graphical version unless it's text based or something i know. take a look at ubuntu explanation on wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29

or ubuntu homepage:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/

by the way, it might be a live cd and linux based operating system doesn't need an anti virus as much as windows but it must be the clamAV as far as i know as the only av available for linux

Nobody read my post carefully . This was a Ubuntu CD but if you pop it in while running xp

If you want a good anti-virus application: in synaptic you can find clamav. If you install clamav, also install clamtk. Clamtk provides you a GUI for clamav.

Main advantage of clamav: it can also scan Windows partitions only if they are mounted under Linux/Ubuntu.

If you want some more info, check my personal site about anti-virus tools. It's written in the Dutch language, but if you need info, then just email me. But you might a good idea about what's available for Linux.

Just curious what was that version of Ubuntu and what was that anti virusGeez, does anyone read the OP ever?

Well if it was definitely in 2007, it could be either 6.10, 7.04, or 7.10 depending on what month it was. By version 6.06 (dapper) ubuntu moved from a brown theme to an orange theme, so that is inconsistent with your memory :(

But I do remember that some live cd's had open source windows software which you could install, and im pretty sure that if it had an antivirus for windows, it would be clamAV

Ah, I do remember 7.10 having Firefox on it for Windows, I am not sure otherwise. Might have been an earlier one.

There are some screenshots at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ubuntu_releases. That may refresh your memory.

I believe 6.06 had some programs like the OP mentioned. It had abiword and firefox and pidgin, but I am uncertain as to whether or not it had the a/v software

I wouldn't call Clamav "good". It's pretty rubbish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clam_AntiVirus#Effectiveness).

As for the OP: I don't believe any of the standard Ubuntu LiveCDs have ever included Windows antivirus packages by default, but there are tools people can use to make their own custom LiveCDs, and there are some ready-made security distros that are based on Ubuntu. You probably had one of those.

This page seems to suggest clamav was included with the 6.06 (Dapper) Live CD for people to use in Windows...

ClamAV stinks. It's virus definitions are WAY behind where they should be.

ClamAV was in Universe on Dapper (http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=clamav&searchon=names&suite=dapper&section=all). I think the article might just be mentioning popular packages that were available?

Have to mention as been having good luck with the program on machines I fix:
Windows Security Essentials. Free from MS and for a freebie, does the job and stays mostly out of the way (unlike some paid crap like Norton or McAffee.)
And, unlike SOME (not all) of the freebies, it will auto update with a standard Windows update instead of doing a manual update.
A way to keep Granny's computer protected just a little bit better than normal user protection!

Possibly, but the article does mention use of a live cd in windows, and it was specifically the ubuntu package that was in universe. The windows .exe may still have just been on the cd.
