Hi. New, been reading, but have not quite found a direct answer for this (don't really like asking questions, but if I must, thanks for your help in advance). I have an older Dell desktop PC. It has no HDD. I got a wiped HDD. Is there a way for me to boot up the Dell PC running Ubuntu straight, or do I have to have an OS already there to be able to boot it? I mean, If I put a CD in it, will it boot from the CD, and install the new OS on the HDD, or install it straight to he HDD with an external USB adapter, then put it back in the PC and run it that way?

Sorry for the questions. I'm pretty new to doing this kind of stuff, although I do have some decent PC knowledge. Thanks again!

Jose

180sx,

Welcome to Ubuntu and the Ubuntu forums.

If the BIOS is intact and you can direct it to boot from the CD drive or flash drive first, you should be able to install Ubuntu from the installation/LiveCD. We have a number of users who completely wipe their drives and have started over with a fresh installation of Ubuntu.
