Dear All,

After windows 7 failed to install and decided to take my partitions with it I managed to restore them from liveCD.

I now can't get grub to work properly. I finally got it to find boot into one of the my two OS', but then borked grub it again when trying to update-grub2.

Output from bootinfoscript attached.

That's the boot script itself.
You need to run the bootscript in the terminal which will then create a results.txt file on your desktop. It is the contents of that file that need to be quoted here in code tags.
To run the bootscript in the terminal, make sure the boot script is on your desktop then run this in a terminal

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

karthick87
January 2nd, 2011, 09:30 PM
:lolflag: you should run that script. It will produce RESULTS.TXT..Post the contents of that file..

Althought the first 2 partitions are Windows partitions there is no Windows operating system on there, as you said.
You have Ubuntu 10.04 on sda5 with intact boot files.
You have Ubuntu 10.10 on sda7 with intact boot files plus a boot file from Grub Legacy - not Grub2.
You also have Grub Legacy installed in the boot sector of sda6, and some of its boot files, but no operating system.
I would suggest that you follow the guide below to purge and re-install Grub via the chroot method. I would mount sda7 as part of that process and install grub2 to the mbr of sda (not sda7)

Actually I already followed this...

One problem I encountered was on doing apt-get install grub-pc grub-common

A prompt appeared listing

'Grub install devices' :
/dev/sda
/dev/sda7

The only thing I can do here, that I can see, is select OK where it then tells me 'You chose not to install grub to any devices.'

After choosing to continue anyway, and running update grub the output lists Ubuntu 10.04 on /dev/sda5.

On rebooting I receive the error 15 again.

From my last post
"install grub2 to the mbr of sda (not sda7)"

Quackers

I think I see your sticking point.
The guide tells you how to do it. If you tab to sda (if necessary) which is where you want grub to install to, you then press the space bar, which enters an asterisk in the box next to sda, then tab to the end and press enter when OK is highlighted.

Wow, being super slow tonight. Thanks, I've got as far as being able to boot into 10.04 on sda5. I have no idea why but grub doesnt give me 10.10 from sda7.

I've tried update-grub from 10.04 no avail. Last time I got this far I tried doing update-grub on sda7 using chroot, but this got me to where I started the thread.

That would be
sudo update-grub from within the normal installed system desktop, yes?
If that doesn't pick up the other system please re-run the boot script and post the output.

I had done this.

If the os-prober isn't picking up any other operating systems, you should be booted into 10.10 on sda7, not 10.04 on sda5.
That is unless you mounted sda5 instead of sda7 in the re-installation of grub?

dougleduck
January 3rd, 2011, 02:43 PM
Go figure. Mounted sda7 certainly where 10.10 resides , and the only operating system on grub is 10.04.

Quackers

Hmm, we need someone with more grub2 experience I think. I'll see if I can get some help.

In the latest RESULTS.txt there is an error in the sda7 fstab:

# / was on /dev/sda9 during installation
UUID=13d23d44-b21d-4e9d-84e6-992ee8f3fe05 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/sda7 /boot ext4 defaults 0 2

First, disregard the # comments. The can't be relied on since they never change, even if the partitions do.

You have a separate line to mount your / partition (sda7) on /boot. Since it appears you don't have a separate /boot partition for this installation, remove that line.

If you don't know how to edit the sda7 fstab from your other running Ubuntu or the LiveCD just ask.

Once you have the fstab fixed and saved, your sda7 should still be mounted. Try making it the default OS by running this commmand:

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/<path to current sda7 mountpoint> /dev/sda

Do not include the partition number, just /dev/sda
Example: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/temp /dev/sda

If it successfully boots to the sda7 installation, run "sudo update-grub" to regenerate the G2 menu.

dougleduck
January 3rd, 2011, 07:19 PM
I tried this but was greeted by a blank screen. So I reinstalled grub again and am back to 10.04 on sda5 again.

I think I've found the problem. For whatever reason looking in /boot of sda7 the files here are
grub/ initrd.img-2.6.35-24-generic

c.f. /boot on sda5
abi-2.6.32-26-generic memtest86+.bin
config-2.6.32-26-generic System.map-2.6.32-26-generic
grub/ vmcoreinfo-2.6.32-26-generic
initrd.img-2.6.32-26-generic vmlinuz-2.6.32-26-generic

I guess this is why update-grub doesnt actually find 10.10. Any idea how I can fix this? I have 10.10 liveCD which i successfully installed with before, can I copy the relevant files from here?
I really would prefer not to re-install.

I guess this is why update-grub doesnt actually find 10.10. Any idea how I can fix this? I have 10.10 liveCD which i successfully installed with before, can I copy the relevant files from here?
I really would prefer not to re-install.

It looks like the kernel got lost along the way. You can install it by chrooting into your sda7 installation via the 10.10 LiveCD.

sudo mkdir /mnt/temp
sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/temp
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt/temp$i; done
sudo chroot /dev/sda7

You should now be at a root prompt.

Update the repositories, install the latest kernel, point the MBR to sda7, and update grub.cfg. This will now have sda7 be the main installation. If you don't want it to take over until you have tested it, run the update-grub command but NOT the grub-install one.

apt-get update
apt-get install linux-image
grub-install /dev/sda
update-grub
exit
Unmount:

for i in /sys /proc /dev/pts /dev ; do sudo umount /mnt/temp$i; done
sudo umount /mnt/temp
Reboot.
