View Full Version : [ubuntu] External HD Install to be used on different system

Hi all,

So I'm giving Ubuntu a first try this week. Fun holiday project of installing a new OS onto an old laptop. I've been searching and looking on the forum to see if this has been done before but maybe I'm not searching right or not reading things right.

Situation: Old Dell laptop/CD-ROM failing/no floppy drive/NIC pins bent and unable to network/unable to boot from USB (BIOS doesn't support this)

So I've yanked out the laptop HD and have externalized it to a USB adapter. Is there a way I can install Ubuntu onto the now externalized HD from a Win 7 machine (or Ubuntu Netbook - this install was easy) and then un-externalize it and plug it back into the old Dell Laptop to use?

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
