View Full Version : [ubuntu] 10.10 clean install freezing after login

I have recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on a new computer (HP Pavilion Elite HPE-377a, as a dual boot with windows 7.
Before installing ubuntu, I shrank the windows 7 partition and added ext4 partitions for (/) and another for (/home).

I loaded 10.10 from live 'DV' and after confirming correct operation completed the install.

The problem is that the system freezes after login (the desktop appears but cannot do anything not even reboot).

After a forced power-down and restart, the system works fine without any problems.

I have googled for info on this and it appears that others have had similar issues, but no solutions.
I do not have the expertise to troubleshoot the problem, and at present am unable to assist with computer spec's because cant find them on ubuntu ?

is anyone able to help with this problem? also information on how to find computer spec's

Please go to the site below and download the boot script to your DESKTOP and then open up a terminal (Applications > Accessories > terminal) and run

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

This will produce a results.txt file on your desktop. Please copy the contents of that file and paste them in your next post between CODE tags. For CODE tags click on New Reply (not quick reply)and then click on the # symbol in the toolbar.
This will give a full overview of your current system.
Thanks.

As you have already found out, this is a common problem for which no fix is known at present. Something that seems to work for quite a few people is: if you have a SATA hard drive, replace the SATA cable by a new high quality one. Personally, I have the same issue on my PC at work: the freezes come at irregular intervals, sometimes while I am just moving my mouse and only gedit and firefox are open.

Thank you. The boot script output looks fine to me.
Does the freezing happen repetetively after doing a particular task? Is it happening after clicking on something when first booted up?
Have you tested the ram?

1. No I have not tested RAM
2. It only freezes on start-up, (after login). The only way to recover is by forced power-down, then when I re-start it does not freeze !

Just thought I'd let you know that I just installed Fedora, it installed immediately (unlike 10.10, which froze in the middle of the installation 3 times, until the installation finally went through) and no freezes after two hours. It's the same gnome and fairly similar selection of software in the repositories, so the differences don't even become that obvious immediately. So as much as I love Ubuntu, it's going to be Fedora for me at work.

Thanks for your input. I too love ubuntu, but the man hours spent in solving problems is becoming an issue. cheers

OK. I have now discovered that the (freezing) problem only occurs following a warm boot (re-start) but does not occur following a cold boot (shut down).

maybe this bit of information can assist in tracking down the problem.

Is there a log that may give an indication ?.
I have looked at them but they don't make any sense to me.
