Deviating from Ubuntu standard, for compatibility with another system in our network (an intradisk (http://www.intradisk.com) NAS with restricted admin features) I have to stick with user IDs below 1000 (namely 501, 502, ...)
In the Ubuntu logon screen, the related users are not shown - and thus cannot be selected for unlocking a session that was locked due to inactivity.
Any ideas?

Can you make that change from users and groups? System -> administration -> users and groups -> advanced settings?

Yes, I can access the advanced settings - but there I can only set/modify user specific contact information, access rights and account settings (personal folder, shell, main group, user ID)

Please see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=575537 , also useful for users migrating from Fedora.
