I may not use it though, as I switch from system to system from time to time, and I'd rather just memorize the long commands.

I refuse to use Alias because it'll make me dumber when using other machines/setting stuff up after a reinstall/update etc.

I'd rather be adept with the standard commands that I can use on essentially any UNIX-like or Free OS.

I used symbols and logicals in the VMS operating system in the 70's and 80's. Symbols were aliases for commands and logicals were aliases for devices and directories. Every time I set up a new account on a different mainframe/mini computer, I had to set up the symbols and logicals.

For those using Ubuntu, if you type "alias" in the terminal, without the quotes, you may find you are using them without knowing it or at least find that some aliases are already set on your machine.
