Kernel 2.6.35-24 dont show desktop

Hi everyone Im having a problem since the last update of my sistem(ubuntu 10.10 64bits), the new
kernel isn't showing my desktop just the terminal mode is there any solution to this ?
I have try with

startx

but give's me error and

sudo service gdm start

say's the service is already runing, what else can I do ? I'm currently working with my old kernel 2.6.35-22
