View Full Version : Good netbook to buy?

Can someone give me some recommendation what netbook to buy?

I just want it for web-browsing (especially translating things online)

I can tell you what not to buy. Stay away from the gma500 based devices which are coupled with Atom z500 cpus.

Ones with the newer Atom N550 are good. It's the dual core Atom.

NO Nvidia ION switchable graphics either.

Those are a big pain in the ***

Acer Aspire One's are good. I like it anyway.

Anything, really. Hell, a $10 netbook coupled with a light distro would work for web browsing.

If I had to pick one, though, it would be Acer Aspire One. Nice speed, durable, but they wont handle more demanding programs.

I've already dropped mine 10+ times (Stopped counting) <Most while it was on> No hardware damage. The harddrive was fine, the RAM wasn't unsettled, or anything. I do have a crack on the outside case though :-( I'm going to have to buy a new one.

I've dropped it on hardwood and cement floors from about the height of my neck. (have to get it high to get wifi.)

+1 for the Acer Aspire One. Here is a more long winded reply in a similar thread where I was telling someone to get a AAO netbook:

But the short answer is they are just a great deal!

gotta agree with aspire one recommendation, been a bit of a gypsy the last 2 years
and this little box has gone everywhere with me and always works fine....of the
many pc's I've owned this cheap little atom powered box has been the most reliable

Is it important that Linux works on it? If yes, then look for Linux reviews on Amazon regarding how compatible they are. If no, then just get something with an N550 - they have better battery life and performance.

I bought an EeePC this week this way. It is pretty awesome :)
