VLC sports Santa's Hat

I fired up VLC this morning and was pleasantly surprised to find this:

After googling it, I now see it's an easter egg that's been there for years, But I've never caught it before (It's on the notification area icon also).

why do you assume it got the icon over the internet? maybe you have it whole year long and it replaces standard icon in this time of the year...
