picking screen saver crashes session

I have a new install of xubuntu 10.10, everytime I try to choose a screensaver the user session crashes back to the user login screen?

The video card is an onboard ATI Savage on a Gigabyte motherboard.

Any suggestions??

I'm sorry I have no suggestions but I am having a similar problem with my 10.04
every time my screensaver runs for a while it hangs and I have to reboot

I also meant to add that when the screensaver is due to kick in it crashes the users session back to the gui login
