I have used a HP compaq nx7400 (Same series of laptops) for four years running many distro's including Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, Sabayon & Slackware.

The only problem I used to have was playing DVD movies, but haven't had that issue for some years. Other than that I have had no problems.

I currently dual boot between Ubuntu & Fedora and everything is smooth.

Hope this helps.

We need to know the specs of your Laptop. Processor and RAM specially and also, graphics card.

I found your product here but RAM and Processor might have been upgraded by you ;-)

And system requirements for Ubuntu are here.

I don't know if the above resolved the OP's question but I'm now trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 desktop on my old HP Compaq nx9010 and the CD simply will not boot up at all.

The CD would whirr for a bit, then just try to boot whatever was on the hard drive (which was Windows XP initially). I didn't want the Windows on it any more, so I formatted the hard drive and now the laptop helpfully informs me that "Bootmgr" is not present.

A quick google shows that a few people have had problems getting Ubuntu to run properly on this model and I've not found any solutions to it yet.

I don't want to give up and reinstall XP just yet, so can anyone give me a few pointers on how to resolve this? I burned the CD with Magic ISO, using the lowest available speed setting if this helps.
