I'm using a HP Deskjet 1050 with Lucid.

The default hplip in lucid doesn't work with this printer so I had to install hplip 3.10.6 which was surprisingly easy. Although I'm still waiting for this driver to support scanning on this device.

HPLIP comes preinstalled. ;) Maybe you're thinking of hplip-gui? Which btw gives you the ability to manage some advanced printing stuff. But generally, any HP printer should be plug and play in Ubuntu.

I'm using Officejet 6500 Wireless in 10.10. I'm very happy with compatibility.

I have an HP j4680 Wifi printer.... it works great as far as plug and play goes.... but when I try to use it in Wifi for some reason it can't connect to the printer for it to actualy print.... recognizes that it's there. can load up the drivers etc.... just can't actually get it to work in Wifi....
