Hello,

My video card is built into the motherboard and takes 256,borrowed from the 1024 of the memory I have installed. I do not have an independent video card.

From System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects,I am ,by default, set on the middle setting,"Normal".

Do I have enough graphics capacity to install the Gnome Shell or should I stick with the desktop that came with 10.10?

-------------

Thank you.

I doubt it. However without HW-acceleration it will be impossible. Have you tried to enable HW-acceleration for your courrent desktop?
Are you sure that you have the best drivers available for your chipset installed and running?

To try Gnome Shell just follow this guide:
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/DistributionPackages

If decided to keep it:

If you can run "normal" effects, then you may be able to run Gnome-shell, but by all likelihood it will not run very well. Test it, you can always go back to the regular desktop.

I missed the point that "Normal" means enabled, but with not to much effects, rather than "None", sorry. Thus HW-accel is already supported by the driver you use. But like 3Miro said, given the fact that you are using an onboard-chip without its own memory, you should not expect a flawless experience.;)

Thank you both.

I tried it and the results were so-so.

But I have space for a PCI express graphics card. After Christmas, when they go on sale,I'll order a 512 card and try again.:-)
