Audio card for Ubuntu 10.4

I installed Ubuntu 10.4 some time ago but it does not detect any audio card. I checked via terminal with the aplay -l command.
Any suggestions on how to install the audio card?

are you shure the mute button is not on///for some reason it is on by default....this has driven me crazy... check mute ...hope this helps
