Text based RPG

I want to design a text based RPG. Never actually played one, but heard about them from friends. Anyone have any suggestions so that I can see what already has been done?

Try ADOM (ancient domains of mystery). There more than a few others, but ADOM is the biggest and nastiest IMO.

Edit- unless you mean totally text based games, like zork.....
