If you had to create a list of rules by which you must live your life, what would they be? (Philosophy)

ALL major religions already have such a list.
Problem is that too many SELECTIVELY follow the list and re-interpret.

only promise what you can keep, and make sure to keep what you promise.

Be honest
Be kind

Essentially, the Golden Rule.

No general rule is good enough. Rules are too rigid, I want to be as flexible in my world view as possible so I can adapt as fast as possible.

well after living a few years, there are no rules.
The only rule in life is to keep it in you pans, and you either are on this side of fence or the other.

-Study as if you'll live forever, but live as if you'll die tomorrow

-I'd rather try something and fail at it, than not try it and forever live with the "what if...."

Those two quotes are what I base my life on

The last one is a little much don't you think? I mean then you can't have children.

The famous poem Desiderata was written over 50 years ago, however, the words of wisdom in this inspirational poetry still applies today.
Desiderata
Written by Max Ehrmann in 1927

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, And remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even the dull & ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud & aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain & bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing future of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I go by the philosophy that one should make no rule that one would object to having enforced on them by someone else.

Don't lie, steal, or cheat are great maximums most of the time, but just like killing or betrayal, I can think of times when they might be appropriate and, in fact, "the right thing to do". So, YMMV.

Good luck in your quest!

Or, put more succinctly: Don't be a ****.

I guess I'd take George Carlin's revised list of the ten commandments (because of familiar cultural background):

1. Thou shalt always be honest and loyal (to the provider of thy nookie)
2. Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone

reminds me of an other one I once saw:

Feel free to break rules when you feel like that's the optimal action to take given the circumstances. This list included.
Do not blindly obey rules that don't make sense and are only in place because that's how it used to be
Do not fall on sentimental appeals and the irrational, treat life as a logical, rational process
Lastly, don't consider this list immutable and binding, consider it as a general set of advice that can be bent to fit the context, given that the general spirit in which they were set remains.

Or, simplified,

Be a thinking person, as your species name implies.
