View Full Version : [kubuntu] Kubuntu 10.10 upgrade failed

I have a dual OS laptop that was running Kubuntu 10.04 and I tried to upgrade to 10.10. Files downloaded and install started, went back to check on it and laptop was shutdown for some unknown reason. When trying to start up Kubuntu it starts up 10.04, I get to the login screen and the keyboard doesn't work to enter my password so I can't login to start the upgrade over. Is there any way around this?

I do have a 10.10 install disk but I don't see an option to upgrade using this disk. Only creating new partitions that I don't want to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

Use the LiveCD to boot the computer and then run the boot info script linked at the bottom of my post (instructions included).

Post the results back here.

Thanks.

Hi and thanks for the results.

When trying to start up Kubuntu it starts up 10.04
Odd, because the results show you have 10.10 on sda5
Operating System: Ubuntu 10.10
I assume something went wrong with the upgrade.

Can you also confirm that Windows is not booting? The script does not indicate that GRUB is picking up the Windows install.

Here is what I suggest:

Boot the computer with a LiveCD and chroot into the file-system and do some repairs.

Basically, chroot means that you take control of the file-system as if you had booted into a normal install.

The procedure is relatively easy and if you follow the commands I provide there should be no problem.

Boot the computer, choosing to try not install.

Go to the terminal and run the following commands:

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt && sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev && sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc && sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys && sudo mount --bind /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts && sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/etc/resolv.conf && sudo chroot /mnt
This will bring you to a root prompt.

Then, run these commands, reporting back if there are errors:

apt-get autoclean
apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install -f
dpkg --configure -a
Note that you do not need to use sudo since you have a root prompt.

If all goes well and no errors occur, exit and unmount before rebooting without the CD.

exit

sudo umount /mnt/dev/pts && sudo umount /mnt/sys && sudo umount /mnt/proc && sudo umount /mnt/dev && sudo umount /mnt

Let me know if anything is unclear or you require additional assistance.

If this allows you to boot Kubuntu again, then I suggest you run
sudo update-grub to try and pick up the Windows install.
