problems after upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: /usr/lib/crt1.o: file not recognized

Hi,
I have upgraded my ubuntu linux from 8.10 (32bit) to 10.04 LTS(64bit), after which i am unable to compile a 32bit binary, i have installed all the 32 bit dev packages. I get the below error

I use a gcc version 4.1.2
