xinput "cant connect to xserver error"

Hello.
Im using ubuntu 10.04 and Im trying to connect a smartboard together with touchscreen/mouse input.

To configure this I want to use xinput but I get the error message:
"Cant connect to xserver"

Anyone knows what to do?
