i just bought a asus 1tb hd 8gb ram gaming laptop and want o load linux in place of the win 7 it ships with . will this be a problem , meaning some of the win 7 being embeded on the disc.

First of all, there should be a recovery partition. Either burn it to discs or make sure you leave it in tact while installing Linux.

Secondly, just a reminded that you can dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu as you know ;-)

Regarding problem... Well it shouldn't be. I would suggest to burn Live CD/USB discs of both the new versions of Ubuntu i.e, 10.04 and 10.10. Run both in Live Session and test all of your hardware. If you are likely to get problems later, they should appear in the Live Session. And install the one that works better on your hardware.

And what do you mean by Win 7 embedded to disc?

It could also be worth checking how many primary partitions are currently in use.
