Hey everybody,

My Dell Inspiron 1720 is getting pretty old by now - and the display hinges are loosening.

I took off the LCD on it and tightened the mounting screws of the display hinges but found out the hinge on the hinges themselves were loose - how would I fix that? Rotating the hinges by themselves - without them being mounted to anything, move less than a millimeter, but mounted on the laptop with LCD - makes the whole screen move around 1/2 inch back and forth.

They look like this:

Any ideas?

The hinges are shot... they should be replaced. If there's wiggle room like that they will eventually go out completely so it's best to replace them now while you have them out. You can get them pretty cheap.

My laptop's monitor does that for the past 5 years and it still hasn't broken or anything. You're fussing over nothing in my opinion.

Thats actually where I got the picture from - partspeople.com. So I guess I'll invest some money to replace them, thanks.

My first thought was to put them in a soft drink; such as, coke-a-cola then let them dry. That should stiffen them up.
