I tried to upgrade to 10.10 through Update Manager but was told I didn't have enough space. How do I get rid of earlier versions of Ubuntu (8.10 through 10.04) without "messing up anything?" Should I keep the 10.04 shell?

P.S. Update Manager instructed me to use Terminal and the command "sudo get-apt (and one other term I don't now remember)." I got no response from Terminal.
