View Full Version : [ubuntu] Lucid Live mounts USB sticks, Lucid installation does not! Why?

Hi,

my system is Ubuntu 10.04.1, kernel 2.6.32-26.
This installation does not mount my 5 (different) USB data sticks, not even adds them to /dev (such as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdb1).

However, the Lucid Live CD has no problems at all with this, nor does Windows which is a dual-boot on the same computer.

Also, when I insert a stick ***bevore*** I boot the installed Lucid system, the stick is added to /dev and automounted smoothly after I have logged-in. Now I can "safely remove" it, insert another one, everything is ok! Alas, after the next boot, Lucid forgets about mounting.

Also strangely, when I updated from the previous kernel to 2.32-26, the Lucid installation did mount once or so, but then it did not any more.

What can be wrong, and can it be fixed?

Thanks,

siggi

Doesn't mount automatically, or never mounts? E.g. do they show up on your Places menu, and if pick one from there by hand, does it mount?

Never mounts and I cannot mount manually because it does not show up in /dev - as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdb1, as it does with Live CD or when inserted *** bevore *** selecting the kernel at boot-up.

What does lsusb show you before and after you plug in a device? The interesting variants are perhaps
lsusb
lsusb -t
sudo lsusb -v
Does the device even show up?

That's it!

After plug-in, there seem to apear some "USB sticklike" lines in the messages, but there is definitely no /sdb and sdb1 in /dev.

Another unlucky user here has the same problem:
http://art.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9622098

And

I found a workaround for me in
http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/warum-werden-usb-datensticks-nur-von-livecd-er/2/
by user TheMartin in his posting of December 12, 22:50.
His solution is based on
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/USB-Datentr%C3%A4ger_automatisch_einbinden#Mit-Hilfe-von-udev
Very briefly, some points, my translation from German:

"With sudo create the file 80-usbdevice.rules, save it in /etc/udev/rules.d/ and add this line:

RUN+="/bin/mount -t vfat -o uid=0,gid=46,umask=007 /dev/sdb1 /automnt/usb-stick"
i.e., if your stick, when mounted, is /dev/sdb and /dev/sdb1.
then

sudo reload udev

and from then on everthing will be ok, as proven with my Ubuntu 10.04.1 and the "bad" kernel 2.6.32-26

I thought so! After maybe 3 or 4 bootings, everything bad as previously, the sticks won't even mount into /dev

Any chance you could upgrade to 10.10 "maverick meerkat"? That might do better.

It's definitely looking like an ubuntu bug, either in udev, hal, or the kernel. Have you tried filing it as a regression in launchpad?

I dearly wish to keep a LTS version!

sorry, what doe "regression" mean in this context. There are already a lot of postings on

After another update - "Important security" and "Recommended" - this morning, the USB sticks behave excellent, despite several boot-ups over the whole day. Hopefully, they will do so for the whole LTS period of Lucid!

Today, one day later, same USB problem as before, despite having had no updates, no nothing!

An old thread but i found it and the solution so thought posting here would help.
