Software Usage Tracking

I am looking for a program that will tell me what programs I have used in the last month, and how often I used them.

It could be either automatic or manually run, and the report needs only to state the name of the program and how many times I started it or how many hours I used it.

I assume my browser will be on the top of the list, but wonder about the rest.

I would like to start donating to some of the programs that I use most often, and need an objective way to determine which projects get my money.

EDIT: After installing the program, it appears to only keep track of which files I opened, not which programs I used.

If Gnome Activity Journal can look into my history to see what files I opened and how long I looked at them, shouldn't there be a plain log file that includes what programs I opened and how long I used them? Or, a command line tool like 'top' that shows what software I used most often instead of which one is using the most memory?

My former colleague speaks highly of Openit http://www.openit.com for monitoring license usage, he can track software usage across all sites in any timezones. Im not sure if they have a free program, i think they only have free demo. anyways the good thing about it is that, it works even without the license manager. haven’t tried it yet, but i maybe evaluating the openit software soon. Will let you know if it works for me.
