First impressions:

Its definitely a lot like the Chrome browser, but with an integrated top panel. That might not be news for some people, but this is the first time I've used ChromeOS. Apps are available in the new Google Apps Marketplace. (makes me glad Canonical changed the title of theirs to 'Software Center')

Im not sure there is a file manager... I havent figured out how to look at /home, but I've only poked around a little bit so far.

It boots in about 10-15 seconds, and the internet is ready to go as soon as you sign in.

That's all I can think of for now, if anyone has any questions ask away :)

Oh, I'll post a couple pics soon too.

I filled it out on Tuesday, about 20 minutes after the Chrome Facebook page posted the info. So, it was a 2 day wait. I did not receive a confirmation email.

From laptopspec.net:

a 1.50 GHz Intel Atom N550 processor, a 12.1-inch display, full-size keyboard without function keys and with a search key instead of caps-lock, an oversized trackpad,

Other features include a built-in webcam, Qualcomm Gobi 3G chip, 802.11n dual-band WiFi, flash storage, USB port and VGA output, and a battery life of 8+ hours.

From the documentation I received:

We've thrown in 100MB of data each month for two years, a limitless day pass for just $9.99, and pay-as-you-go rates that are easy to understand and don't require any long-term contracts.

Almost. When it asked about office related work I said I use MS Office, because at work we use Windows, and well, that's what I use. At home, there's not a lot of document creation going on.

I was shocked too, but the box said 'next day air' on it, so I guess Google are serious about getting this thing out.

I doubt very much that Google would be sending free Netbook and give away all the business to Verizon. They must be getting a cut or it would not make any sense unless Verizon is picking the tab for this marketing/beta program!

Try Ctrl-L -- shifts the focus to the URL search box, AND highlights everything in it, simultaneously. Firefox works the same way. Speaking of which... I bet Google makes it next to impossible to install an alternative browser on the Chrome notebook.

Not true at all. It's got a 16GB SSD, probably 1GB of ram and a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor. It's totally feasible to use with Ubuntu or another proper Linux distro (as opposed to the barebones Linux underpinning Chrome OS). Only thing right now is that despite the jailbreak switch on the laptop, it doesn't seem anyone has been able to get the Cr-48 to recognize the USB stick in start-up. The only issue that worries me is how poor most Linux distros seem to be at battery life. It might not be able to match the barebones Chrome OS on battery life, but it'd be nice to get close to that. Beyond that I suspect the Cr-48 would currently function a lot better with the hardware and driver support of Ubuntu, although if I get one I'll wait until the pilot period is over to install, since it'll be an exciting ride over the next few months.

I just signed up using Chrome and selected all the internet options.

That be super sweet if I get it. I'd like to give it a serious test drive. I haven't really been too enamored with cloud computing because of having to have a constant internet connection. But this machine has a 3G card that is paid for two years! I could really have some fun experimenting.

I can always tether to my phone for any thing that is bandwidth intensive. I'm not about to pay extra for more.

I think it was a very smart move for Google use Verizon for the 3G. I am a Verizon customer and I can honestly say they have extremely good 3G coverage. I do ALOT of traveling to many different states and some very rural areas. While I do run into some areas that are just 1X, for the most part I almost always have a 3G connection and its almost always faster then my home dsl. People who get this notebook will be able to use it virtually everywhere.

Good thing they didn't go with AT&T ;)

I received a confirmation page (see attachment).

Uh oh... I definitely did not get that page, but I'm afraid to sign up again as I WAS redirected to a secure page after signing up. Did you get a confirmation email as well?

Well, I checked all of the three addresses in my city and apparently people named Yogi, Kristen, and Christopher are all getting Chrome netbooks.

Things are looking very bleak for me. D: It's weird because I assumed that not many people around me knew about this, but four people were accepted in my city (one was already shipped).

Apparently the shipper is "Insight" though. I wonder if this is correct.

I also got the netbook. Filled out the survey on the 6th and got it on the 9th.

I tried to play Netflix but it says that it is not compatible with the OS. However, you can add movies/shows to your Instant Queue.

I recently found the developer switch and am currrently working on getting it to dual boot.

And I'd like to dual boot Chrome OS and Peppermint. Two cloud based OS on this machine would be too cool :p

I read an article yesterday that some had popped up on Ebay. At the time of the article the auction was around $500 or so.

bad news for me, see pic.
It shows one was delivered to my zip code on the 9th,...I was at school all day so they could have dropped it off at the apartment office but they left no notice....

Who is delivering these? UPS, Fedex, or post office? are they signature required? I know at least one shipper leaves things at my front door, completely unsecured.

3 possibilities:

1. I was not selected but someone else in my zip code was (most likely)

2. they delivered it to the apartment office and forgot to leave a note (hoping)

3. they delivered to my front door and somebody stole it (highly unlikely)

EDIT: good news for some people they are still shipping some out, I checked the zipcode next to mine...

one due for delivery 12/13 sent overnight

one due for delivery 12/16 sent ground

unfortunately unless mine got shipped to the management office with no notice I am out of luck

for me, i don't like everything on the cloud.
I use internet and it's really helpful for communicating and media.
But for my music, I want it to play from my hard disk. I also want to store my images on my hard drive though some was posted on such as fb or flicker but having it on hard drive is better specially if you want to keep it private. I also play offline games such as rpg or something like strategy.

i use Internet for using forum, email, downloading stuffs, specially searching/googling and etc.. but still i want some of the things from my hard drive. :D

it's hard for me to be 100% cloud person haha

My prediction is that the Chrome OS Cloudbook price point will be around $199 maybe even cheaper. At that price it going to be a no brainer if you want an extra laptop just for the basement or something you want to take on a trip and not feel too bad if it get trashed. You know the type of things we believed Netbook will become before they jacked the price and froze the spec to appease Microsoft. I can see myself investing more on a better desktop for my home and a cheap Cloudbook to lump around.

It reminds me of the whole "trusted computing" scare of the early 2000s.

They'll be more of a pain, but that doesn't make it sensible to complain about it. It isn't going to change. It's _meant_ to be a pain; these are not your regular PCs. They are built as appliances, with the software bolted directly on to the hardware. It's a different approach entirely.

Now, doing it for fun: more power to you. I think it's a little unfair to do it to a CR-48, but in general making hardware do stuff it isn't built to do can lead in all sorts of exciting directions.

Don't know if anyone else here has heard, but there's a way to get Ubuntu running on the machine. It takes a little bit of work, but Linux geeks shouldn't have a problem with getting it on there. You can dual boot between Chrome OS and Ubuntu, so it may come in handy and makes the CR-48 a little more useful.

Here's a tutorial for installing Ubuntu:
https://sites.google.com/a/chromium....ntu-on-a-cr-48

And a video of it running on the machine:

That makes me laugh, as I had my Cr-48 in my hands 10 hours ago at the time of this post. They started shipping the day before IIRC.

Anyway, dual-booting is not defrauding Google. It's taking away half of the initial purpose, but if you still use Chrome OS for the original purpose (report bugs), then what's wrong with that? I'll dual-boot and I've already started doing my part.

It's only like a $300 computer, not a big gain/loss. Like someone said, I'd like to do it just for the sake of DOING IT. Just to say I did. There's no real rhyme or reason (besides psychologically I suppose). Unless there's an easier method, I doubt Windows will go on this machine, though I'll be getting around to Ubuntu as soon as I have time to do all that crap.

The "trusted computing" scare of the early 2000s won't happen here because Chrome OS contains GPL v3 code.

Installing another OS on hardware so intrinsically designed in tandem with ChromeOS is both trivial and counterproductive at best. Instead of devoting so much time on trying to get something that isn't supported at all to work, why not spend that time reporting bugs in the software in order to improve it, which is the intended purpose of Google's program right now.

Actually installing another version of GNU / Linux on the notebooks is perfectly legitimate and well within the intended purpose of the program since it demonstrates that Google is in compliance with GPL v3.

I'm going to agree with this statement. Sure it proves you're the man of hackers but in good faith you signed up to beta test and not hack their product. I tried in vain to install Chromium OS to my EeePc, but something was holding it back from even booting. I now see that the image alone probably over stressed my little Eee. Heck I looked at it with Gparted and thought I'd written over another OS that was previously on the thumb drive.

Don't rely on the information given on the CR-48 shipping tracker hosted by addicted-gamer.com it is inaccurate.

For my zipcode they only show 3 laptops being delivered with the following specifications:

Go to "chrome://flags" without the quotes and enable Advanced Filesystem. Then go to the bottom and restart Chrome. When you plug in sdcard, it should say scanning device. If not, try pressing control and o. I've attached an image of what it should look like.

I got my SD card to show but I couldn't browse it.

I am just trying the 14 day free trial of MOG out, but so far I find it is the best music software I have found (much better then itunes and pandora) and $4.99 a month is completely affordable.

Anyone else install the "Chrome for a cause" addon? Found another (small) annoyance:

Whenever your netbook is asleep for a while (after you close the lid) and you open it back up you have to wait for your Wifi connection to reconnect. I assume it puts your wifi card to sleep also.

It won't do it right away, say, if I closed it and opened it right back up -- I would still have wifi.

Don't rely on the information given on the CR-48 shipping tracker hosted by addicted-gamer.com it is inaccurate.

For my zipcode they only show 3 laptops being delivered with the following specifications:

http://addicted-gamer.com/cr48-tracker

...but when I do the tracking using the UPS tracking number it shows that it shipped on 12/13 and Delivered on 12/15 via 2nd Day Air

I wouldn't rely on the info from addicted-gamer

I also live in a small town, total population about 55,125 but it is home to a major University. This is Google so I suspect they have a refined algorithm, perhaps based on all factors; answers to questions, zipcode, and if you rank high enough they probably read your essay and this is most likely the final determining factor.

Of course if your rank is high enough they may not have to read your essay, but I would think those are rare occasions.

"Essay"? You get a 140 character tweet to tell all. One of the things I most like is the flat black, slightly rubbery case, with absolutely no distinguishing markings.

Apparently they were designed for jailbreaking: http://chromestory.com/2010/12/rooting-or-jailbreaking-chrome-os-is-an-official-feature-in-chrome-notebook-cr48/

From here (http://chromeossite.com/2010/12/18/14000-cr-48-chrome-notebooks-shipped-so-far/):

14,000 CR-48 Chrome Notebooks Shipped – So Far

As Google battles to reach it’s target deployment of over 60,000 CR-48 Chrome Notebooks, it seems that the company has only managed to ship out almost 14,000 as of today. This is according to the latest figures from the ‘CR-48 Shipping Tracker’ Web App. Last week we reported how only 1/10 of CR-48′s had been shipped, it seems as if the number has more than doubled in the last few days . Of -course 14,000 notebooks may sound like a small number, but taking into consideration that Google is giving these away for free to start off their Chrome OS Beta testing program; it is arguable that the internet giant is doing well so far.

A logistical nightmare.

The possible reason why the CR-48′s are taking so long to ship out could be that Google is still jostling to get Inventec to keep up it’s production levels. On the other hand it is possible that the sorting of the thousands of applications that flooded Google for the beta program is proving difficult to handle. In essense, Goolge employees will have to determine which individuals are most likely to benefit the company and the Chrome OS project the most if given the opportunity to own a Chrome Notebook. Only after these individuals are identified can the devices be sent out.

A phased deployment

Another school of thought is that Google is planning on a phased deployment of these devices. This would mean a gradual increase in feedback from CR-48 users. Imagine if Google sent all the 60,000 notebooks within a week; it would be a costly nightmare to deal with all the bug reports coming in from that many beta testers in a small period of time. Hence a phased introduction would avoid these problems by limiting the ‘flood’ of customer feedback on the device.

Odd Criteria

So far there has been a lot of discussion regarding Google’s seemingly odd criteria for choosing it’s beta testers. We’ve seen people who have never used Chromium OS or even Chrome receiving CR-48′s. Some people had never really heard of Chrome OS until they somehow found out about it during the Chrome Event and chose to apply for the Beta program.

It is also pretty odd that the main proponents of the Chrome OS and Chromium OS projects such as Hexxh have been sidelined in this process by virtue of them not being in the USA. It would seem logical if Google made an exception for people such as him who are pivotal to the success of this open source project.

The Good News – yours might be on the way

If it is indeed true that only about 14,000 of these devices have been shipped today, this means that you still have a great chance of gettiing one (if you applied a couple of days after the Chrome Event). So in the mean time, join us in the forums while you wait for your CR-48 to land on your doorstep.

Considering how many billions of dollars Google is worth, assuming the cost to Google for each Cr-48 is $100, that's only $6 million -- which seems like a pretty good ad buy, once this story really hits the media.

I don't have one (yet), but from everything I've seen there is no Grub screen. It boots directly into Chrome OS. Dual-booting involves manually moving a switch to developer-mode and booting Ubuntu. AFAIK you could just wipe Chrome OS and install Ubuntu if you wanted, but as one of the articles said: "where's the fun in that?"

I'm a little confused about some of the stuff I'm hearing.

Supposedly it's only open for another day. Yet I keep hearing that they've only handed out around 14,000 so far out of the 60,000 they have.

If that's the case, how is it some people who applied on day one still don't have one? My buddy applied as soon as possible and thought he just got denied and shrugged it off as if they were trying to limit what they were handing out for specific people. But if there's only 14k handed out and another 46k sitting, it just makes me wonder why anybody WOULD get denied...

If you have 120,000 people apply, I got it. But if you have 30,000 apply, why limit it to 14,000 when you have 60,000 available?

Then again, this is all just rumors I'm hearing. I have no idea what's true or what numbers there are. Just thinking out loud.

Just because they have shipped only 14,000 units doesn't mean they didn't receive more than 60,000 applications. Plus, they are competing with all the other holiday shippers.

I registered as an individual on December 9, using Firefox 4, not Chrome. I got no feedback whatsoever from Google, and didn't expect to get one. The "tell us why you want to be part of the program was a 140-character field; i.e., a tweet. My Cr-48 arrived Friday afternoon, December 16, 8 days after filling out the form. Total surprise.

Yeah I've heard differing time frames for when they were closing the application. The email I got from Google said to apply by Friday the 10th but then I've read Dec. 21st was the official close date around the web.

As far as how I filled it out: I was honest to a Tee. I applied as an individual and stated that I used some but not all of their products and was a "linux enthusiast" and "have been interested in cloud computing for a long time" or something like that.

Took about a week to arrive, was completely surprised as I thought I didn't have a chance in hell.

I'm a fan of the tiered release theory. Instead of releasing all 60,000 at once, they will stagger the release over a few months, so as to keep the bug reports from being completely overwhelming. Of course I have no validation that this will be the case, it just kind of makes sense to me.

Another great tip, although I have basically given up on the trackpad until they fix the usability issues (assuming they are fixable via software). Mouse works great.
I never found any track pad that usable but after doing a recovery and updated Chrome OS as well as tweaking the trackpad sensitivity I have found it more usable, fortunately for us they have a usb port for a usb mouse...speaking of which I just plugged in my Razer Copperhead using with my Razer eXactMat and of course it works great with the CR-48! Yay for Razer mice!

(assuming they are fixable via software) - I will say yes that trackpads are fixable via software case in point on my Fujitsu Lifebook T4210 I just installed a dual boot to the latest Ubuntu on to recover my Chrome OS on my CR-48 (refer to this thread: http://goo.gl/cNEm6 )...the trackpad works better on Ubuntu then it ever did on Windows XP of course on that computer I usually use the active digitized pen.

I caught this news a little later in the game and put in for mine on Saturday (the 18th). It sounds like the deal is over on the 20th or 21st or something. I hope I can get a hold of one. I work in a school district, and I think these things *may* have a huge future in our district.

I answered the questions honestly, but after reading them I was like wow I'm such a google fanboy. I can't help it though. Gmail, Google Calendar, Chrome, Linux, etc...

I hope I can snag one...I; like some people, applied on December 7th after receiving an email invite to apply from The Chrome Team, in the email they specifically state:

To apply to get your Chrome notebook, please provide your US mailing address by clicking the link below no later than Friday, December 10, 2010 at 11:59 PM PST.

So I see no confusion about the deadline.

I do say that most of the early ships I have seen have been to hand selected individuals it may be that educators and businesses may get the bulk of the shipments but at later dates. I do hope that educators as yourself get shipped, this may be why they have so many left...they may wait to ship to schools after Winter break.

I don't know about TV (don't watch much) but this story is all over print media and the web. Not just blogs either, NYT, LA Times, etc. A giant like Google handing out 60,000 free computers does make headlines.

Edit: And I agree it is a great ad buy. Smart move by Google. I think more than "feedback" and "testing" that this is to create buzz.I know people who haven't even followed the Google Chrome development sign up for free computers...albeit spare a few paranoid schizophrenics :p

I've been too busy playing with my Cr-48 since I opened the box Friday to check current news. I have a pretty low opinion of the information habits of the bulk of the population, and if it isn't on CNN or Fox, it's not news. Maybe Oprah will do a segment on 60,000 FREE computers. ;)

Actually Google Chrome has a great news App form the New York Times

I registered after I received an email invite from the Google Chrome team, I asked to be informed on news about Google Chrome OS some time ago. I answered all questions honestly.

It took 8 days between the time I applied and when I received my CR-48 (see pictures and screenshots on my iCR-48 blog (http://www.icr-48.com/)) of course it only took 2 days for the CR-48 Cloudbook to ship once they made their decision. I do believe that Google is being selective and if you just BS the short essay you may not receive one, of course being Google I do believe that they utilize a complex algortyhm based on all factors to meet their decision criteria.

People may be reading too much into the selection process; at least one forum has suggested that Google is selecting by zipcode. Think about it: let's assume 100,000 people apply. Are human beings at Google going to go through 100,000 applications of 140 characters each? That's not a job I would want. With their resources, I suppose Google could throw software at the job, but 140 characters isn't much for machine-based decision making.

Far simpler would be to select by zipcode (which is more or less population based) with a limit on how many machines go to a given zip code, or to exclude specific zip codes, such as, to use a doubtful example, Microsoft's headquarters. I'm not saying this is what Google is doing, but it seems as good an approach as any, and is eminently applicable to machine selection from a large number of entries in a short time.

There are four types of ZIP codes: Unique (assigned to a single high-volume address), P.O.-box-only (used only for P.O. boxes at a given facility, not for any other type of delivery), Military (used to route mail for the U.S. military) and Standard (all other ZIP codes). As examples of Unique ZIP codes, certain governmental agencies, universities, businesses or buildings that receive extremely high volumes of mail have their own ZIP codes...

Despite the geographic derivation of most ZIP codes, the codes themselves do not represent geographic regions; in general, they correspond to address groups or delivery routes.
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_code

Google is notoriously tight-lipped about development. I was involved in the Google Scholar ( http://scholar.google.com/ ) pilot project, and for 6 weeks I couldn't get a word from my contact at Google about what the hell it was supposed to do. Then I got an e-mail around midnight, saying "Google Scholar just went live." It's the way they work.

I sure hope if they balance it out with zip codes that one comes my way then. I live in an area that is pretty country-ish and not really strong in the IT field. If it wasn't for my job @ the district, I'd be commuting pretty darn far if I had another IT job. I can see if I was in downtown Washington DC and they already sent 400 to that town as to why they might limit them a bit.

Judging by the tracker (which has been suggested is not all that accurate to begin with), there hasn't been much sent to my area. In fact, when I scan 5 zip codes nearby, a grand total of maybe 8 show up. Three have none, one has one, and the 5th one has a small handful... but that last one is also the zip code to the inner city about 20 minutes north...

Hoping...

Until Google addresses the issue with a software update, I think I may have a partial solution to the twitchy trackpad issue. Even though I have sensitivity turned all the way down, the trackpad is still too sensitive, and especially bothersome is the fact that the lower edge of the trackpad, which one would expect to be used as a click area, also responds to finger movement.

I just happen to have some 14 mil adhesive vinyl film lying around, and I put a strip about a half inch wide along the bottom edge of the trackpad. Amazingly, it still detects finger movement in this area, but sensitivity seems to be somewhat reduced, to the point where I'm no longer getting phantom inputs from this part of the trackpad. If I like this, I may try covering the entire trackpad with the stuff (it's designed to be removable, so no adhesive residue to worry about).

Yeah, I agree with that too. I'm just trying to understand what their filtering process may be. Being in a school district I'm just praying we get one. Our fleet of laptops are aging and if these are an affordable alternative it just may be the ticket we need to keep taxes low yet get the gear we need.

I know that the ChromeOS runs off of a cloud, but I'm wondering as it matures how customizable it may be. For example, if WE could host the cloud image of the OS itself internally via our wifi network, that would be a hit.

Check it... ChromeOS comes pre-defined from Google and when fired up, you connect to it automagically and that's your OS. What if we could take that, add our own extensions and custom settings for our district, and then connect to that custom image instead of Google's? I see HIGH potential with this gizmo... the cost effectiveness could be a tremendous hit for districts like this.

I just hope I get one, because that could help justification on holding out longer to see how this product matures or doing something else.

I'm not yet 100% certain, but I think that if you enable Advanced Filesystem, it tries to figure out what a USB mouse is. Not fatal, but annoying, and since I couldn't really do anything with a flash drive with this setting enabled, I disabled it.
