I'm currently using gredit but I ran into an error when trying to open a file and this is what I received;

"gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character encoding from the menu and try again."

Can anyone recommend a program similar to gredit but with better adaptability... something a little more... robust... :p

Thanks

Install 7zip or rar from the software center extract the archive and then view it.

It was compressed to better the download time

I have rar

......

Ignore the file and error.

I'm just looking for a text editor with more options then the simple gredit that came with the OS. Does anyone know of any?

That's a different question , text editors generally don't decompress files . it is normally a two step process . That doesn't mean that a text editor which preforms decompression doesn't exist. I would start in the software center , two advanced editors are Bluefish and Winefish.
