Ubuntu is very much behind other Linux distributions on Linux Counter (http://counter.li.org/reports/machines.php)

Here is the current statistics:

151941 registrations entered 154792 values
distribution Count Percent
conectiva 850 0.56%
debian 32022 21.08%
diy 856 0.56%
fedora core 10250 6.75%
gentoo 13585 8.94%
knoppix 829 0.55%
mandrake 12721 8.37%
mandriva 1877 1.24%
red hat 16910 11.13%
s.u.s.e 16097 10.59%
slackware 16140 10.62%
ubuntu 8638 5.69%
Others 24017 15.81%

I suggest people should register on Linux Counter (http://counter.li.org/).

In addition to personal registration you need to enter your machine on which you are using Ubuntu so that the Ubuntu users number goes up.

Well, Linux Counter is a hanging around for a while now, and lot's of its information is not updated (since it is user dependent).

For instance, I have 2 computers now. I had 2 before, but one got dead and I set another one this year. In Linux Counter I'm registered as having 2 systems (which include my dead system), both of which are running Mandrake 9.0 and Mandrake 9.2. That's not true anymore.

ps: I have updated my info, but probably many users don't.

We now have a ubuntu user counter @ http://ubuntucounter.geekosophical.net/

This should be automated. On install, the user could be asked wether he/she wants to register in Linux Counter. Something like the popularity-contest package.

there is also popularity contest (that also keeps stats on what packages you have installed).

just install the popcon package, then check http://popcon.ubuntu.com/
