View Full Version : [ubuntu] Kernel Panic - Not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Hey guys, I've recently been trying to install Ubuntu to my old computer, and I've been having a lot of trouble. I've tried several installs, from Ubuntu 10.10, to 10.04, and now I've just tried the alternate installer for 10.10. The most common error I get is after I install, and I try to boot Ubuntu from the GRUB menu, it gives me the error:

Kernel Panic - Not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)I'd figured it may have been a corrupt download, so I bought some new CD-RWs, re-downloaded the .iso, and it still isn't working.

Now I really don't know very much about computers, and I would appreciate if you would walk me step by step on how to fix this.

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the Ubuntu forums. :-)

We need to see the status of your boot files. Please go to the following site and download/run the boot info script. Post the contents of the RESULTS.txt and we can probably help you out.
http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net

Often the problem is an incorrect path in the grub menuentry, but until we see the RESULTS.txt we really won't know.

Okay, I guess I'll just paste it all.

Sorry if I'm doing this wrong:

I don't see any problems with RESULTS.txt. If it's a Grub2 problem we can fix it by removing and reinstalling it. Here is the link:
HOWTO: Purge and Reinstall Grub 2 from the Live CD (http://http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1581099)
In Step 1 the partition you want to mount is /dev/sda5

I tried that and still got the same problem.

What exactly is a kernel? Do I need to download one from www.kernel.org or something?

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi

If its not an issue with grub then maybe it a problem with initramfs. You could try booting into the LiveCD, mounting the partition and regenerating initramfs

sudo mkdir /mnt/drive

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt/drive

sudo update-initramfs -k all -u -b /mnt/drive/boot

Maybe that's the problem. Good luck.

As for the kernel...

Kind regards.

I think that different HDD partitionig can help. But first of all check your HDD connection(power supply!!!,because of old computer).Even after succesfull installation, loose power connection coming to KERNEL PANIC after reboot!!!!
