The other day my family notified me that our family pc wasn't working. I had one of the previous versions of ubuntu installed on it and it had been doing fine for months. I have no idea what caused this to happen, since my family doesn't use the computer for much of anything apart from e-mail and basic internet needs. When I tried to boot to see what they were talking about, the gateway screen came on, and then I got a screen with "error: file not found." There was nothing at this point that I could do past that screen.

I have backed up files while on a live ubuntu disk and reformatted the hard drive. I installed ubuntu 10.10, and when the installation was complete, I got the following after restarting:

error: file not found.
error: you need to load the kernel first.

Failed to boot both default and fallback entries

Press any key to continue...
I pressed enter in order to continue, and then ubuntu booted for me. I have duplicated this three times in a row so far. What's going on? Why am I getting this error message first?

Thank you in advance for any help. :)

Using the old version of GRUB instead of the current beta version may fix it for you.
