My HP netbook is toast! I've been advised to install an ubuntu netbook version. Are there any files I need to salvage from the "XP" currently occupying the hard drive . . . like a nic or an adapter etc. before I do a wipe and new load of this OS. I've never had the pleasure of using a linux OS but am looking forward to it.
Thanks!:D

Welcome to the forums!
A good first step is to look up your specific netbook model on this list:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks
Most of the HP netbooks are pretty well supported in Ubuntu, apparently.
Second step is to prepare a Live USB following the instructions here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook/get-ubuntu/download
Third step is to boot your netbook using the USB stick you just prepared, and test-driving Ubuntu in "live" mode (no change to your computer). If there are files you need to rescue from your broken XP install, this is a good opportunity to do so (you can use Ubuntu's file manager to copy them to a flash drive or external hard drive). Take your time and explore all the features of Ubuntu. In particular make sure that all of your hardware (wifi, webcam, suspend/hibernate, etc) work.
Once you've tested Ubuntu thoroughly and you're sure it is right for your needs, then you can go ahead and install. A lot of new users rush the install without properly evaluating Ubuntu first. Personally, I have a "dual boot" of Linux and Windows so that I can choose between them depending on my needs that day.
Good luck! :)
