Is it possible to hide the gnome-panel on the fourth workspace?

Any advice much appreciated!

Gnome-panel doesn't have that option, so the short answer is "Sorry, but No".

You can check xinerama and/or dual-monitor setup to perhaps achieve something similar (i.e. the panel is shown on one monitor and not the other, xinerama has other nice options too).

Thanks for the suggestion. It's a shame that gnome-panels can't do that. The Xinerama set up would involve running multiple Xservers (correct?) which is a bit overkill in my case.

Your answer helped me find another approach using wmctrl and I'm trying it now.
