View Full Version : [SOLVED] Problem after upgrading

Hi

I recently upgraded to the newest version of Ubuntu. I dual boot with Windows 7.

All was going fine the first few times I used my system after the upgrade but I have now run into a serious problem. I'm not that technical so will explain this as best i can.

Basically, when I switch my computer on, I can not get to the screen that allows me to choose an operating system. Before it gets there it just restarts.

I guess its a problem with the GNU GRUB software. It just seems like the computer can't find it and restarts itself. So I can't get into either Ubuntu or Windows at the moment.

Any thoughts on what is causing the problem and how it could be fixed would be appreciated.

Hi.

Please boot an Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Select the try mode. Then download bootinfoscript here.

http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net

Copy it to your desktop. Go to Applications > Accessories > Terminal and paste this command.

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

It would generate a Results.txt on your desktop. Open it and copy paste all the text from that file in to your post here.

Before pasting, either click # from post menu and paste the text in between generated code tags or after pasting, highlight the text and click #. Or type
at the end and
at the beginning of your text.

Thanks.

Thanks for the output of bootinfoscript

That output seems pretty normal to me. I would wait for some more members opinions before advising to reinstall Grub. Please hang in there.

And please reconfirm that as soon as your computer gets past the Bios screen and before getting to the Grub menu, it just restarts? Mean in a cycle of 5-10 sec, it keeps on restarting over and over again?

Hi - yes, that's exactly what is happening.

When the grub menu loads make sure the correct item is highlighted and press the "e" key. Then with the down and right arrow keys navigate to the "quiet splash" and delete it, then press ctrl+x to boot.
This will scroll loads of messages during boot and it will stop where there is a problem. It may stop for a short while and then carry on. When it ultimately stops make a note of the error or maybe "recordfail" and post the details please.

The problem you are experiencing sounds as if it might be hardware related. Have you checked your settings in BIOS to make sure that everything is as it should be?

To rule out a possible problem with the upgrade, here is what you need to try:

Boot the computer with the LiveCD and run the following commands to chroot into your Ubuntu install (chroot basically means you take control of the root file system as if you has booted normally).

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt && sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev && sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc && sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys && sudo mount --bind /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts && sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/etc/resolv.conf && sudo chroot /mnt
Once you have the chroot, indicated by a root prompt in the terminal, run the following commands. Report back if there are errors:

apt-get autoclean
apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get -f install
dpkg --configure -a
When finished running the commands, exit and unmount before rebooting:

exit

sudo umount /mnt/dev/pts && sudo umount /mnt/sys && sudo umount /mnt/proc && sudo umount /mnt/dev && sudo umount /mnt
Reboot, taking out the LiveCD and let us know if you still have a problem.

Good luck!

Rubi1200 -

Thanks for trying to help. I've done what you suggested but I'm still having the problem.

If you have any other ideas that would be great. If not, I guess it might be a hardware problem so I will take it to be fixed.

Thanks.

The only other thing I can think of is to run a file-system check, but I am not sure what good it would do as this really does sound like a hardware issue from what you describe.

In any event, since it won't do any harm; from a LiveCD again, run these commands:

sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sda5

If it reports errors, run this:

sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sda5

Exit, reboot, taking the CD out and let me know what happens please.

Before taking it for hardware repairing, I would suggest to re-install Grub. There are no errors in your Results.txt but who knows? And some-times, bootinfoscript can report in-correctly.

You need to do these 2 simple commands from Ubuntu Live CD and then reboot and try to boot from the HDD.

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda

Note, for the second one it is just sda without an integer and not sda5 ;-)

Thanks to everyone who offered help. Its quite a relief that I can now use my computer.

Glad to know that :-)

I thought like your MBR was just corrupt in some way and Bios wasn't able to locate Grub.

If you don't see Windows listed in your Grub menu, boot Ubuntu from your Hard disk and do this command.

sudo update-grub

And it should find Windows and add it (if not already there).
