...and now finds texting easier. I'm having to explain to her why it is rude to send multiple short texts back-to-back without giving the other person a chance to respond.

I'm sure the excitement will wear off soon. I take it this is her first real Smart Phone. :D

Congrats to your mom :) I got my wife a DroidX a few months ago, which was her first smart phone, and she fell in love with it. After a few weeks I got me one too, and honestly the 'new' has never worn off. I use this thing all the time, and it never leaves my side. It's almost addictive having the Internet in your pocket...

Yup, her first smartphone. I've never owned one, but apparently the family plan has a zillion customer loyalty points or whatever. I'll be picking mine up this weekend.

She chose that phone because when she asked me what I wanted in a $0 phone, "anything android" was my answer. She said the brand was LG.

Since it's being given away, I'm assuming it's locked down and not one of the more recent LG android offerings.

Glad to hear she got a Android phone and not a iPhone(barf)... Makes me happy to see more satisfied Android users just as I'm happy to see more and more happy linux/ubuntu users by the day :)

Aha!

LG only has only one Android phone offered with our carrier that comes in purple.

So, here's what I am getting...

I may be known to give lectures to friends and family about DRM and the Four Fundamental Software Freedoms from time to time, when it comes up....

Your mum is more technologically advanced than me! I don't have a smartphone, I kind of like to phones to be phones but if I did (and I might) I would get an Android phone. No way on earth I would have a lifestyle marketed piece of ar$e like an iPhone.

My missus got the HTC Desire recently and she hates change and isn't a tech fiend yet she reluctantly agrees she loves it and is one of the best purchases she has made. Now I'm trying to convince her to get into using Ubuntu as just like her lovely new phone it is based on Linux ;)

I fully agree with the spirit of the part I put in bold.

I like my keyboards, and my netbook. With this $0 Android phone and $10 Ubuntu-friendly (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1530546) easytether (http://www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/android.html) app purchase, my netbook is no longer forced to rely on public wifi hotspots.

I already carry a cell phone around with me, and the additional cord would go into what I already carry my netbook in. Very convenient. More of a netbook accessory than a smartphone. :P

I have an HTC Desire. I love it. Thinking about upgrading to the Desire-Z soon.
