How does data providers, such as Cogent, Level (3), and GlobalCrossing provide a connection to the interwebs thats better than the average ISP?

Hi,

companies such as those that you named are typically backbone providers. they provide large bandwidth across long distances and connect to local ISP's. you most likely always go over their backbones all the time, unbeknowst to you, the end user.

home/business users typically do not directly purchase service from these backbone providers.

regards.

ISP ReSells the connection, BackBone ISP are the true connection provider, Fiber Optic crossing the ocean.
