Canonical has been talking about Ubuntu Light for awhile, but do not seem to have their work available for users to download and try. I read an article about Ubuntu Light being preinstalled on Dell machines, so I did a little digging on Dell.com and found this.

http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R281810&formatcnt=0&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=416533

I downloaded it already and it does not work on VMWare..... but maybe it'll work as a live cd or usb install. Have not tried it yet.

Cool find none-the-less.

Here's the features of Ubuntu Light as provided for Dell.

EDIT: It works on usb, but I don't have the drivers to make it work on my PC or netbook. Also, it checks for compatibility( a certain machine) If this iso was remade with the standard Ubuntu driver set and without that compatibility check, it could be a great netbook OS. Download it Linux hackers, we could benefit from this working!

Dell might take the link done if it gets flooded, so those who have a cable, plz set up a torrent. :)

Yo, I expected people to get excited about this! I found an OEM version of Ubuntu Light that is NOT available to the general public!

As Navi from LoZ:OT always said when something needed to be paid attention too....

Hey! LISTEN!

It just looks like a customized version of Unity, which is already available as the Netbook Edition.

There was a nice demo of it at UDSN:

It's a little more than that :)
Ubuntu Light is designed to fit snugly with Windows as a pre-boot option. The two are integrated beautifully to the point you can configure Ubuntu Light from the control panel in Windows, and a button in Ubuntu seamlessly starts Windows.

I have to admit, I only looked at the pdf, It didn't read, but in the back of my mind I did know it was loaded from a solid state device.

I know Canonical has to keep somethings to themselves in order to make a profit, but I wish they had released Ubuntu Light to the general public. Its open source, where's the source code for this custom build?

I hope someone sees this thread and file and modifies it to be another Ubuntu distro. Whether Canonical intended it to be or not. I'm not attacking Canonical, I just wanted all of my option available to me. I'd like to run Ubuntu Light on my computer.

Who should I send this to in order to make it better known to the public? OMG!Ubuntu! ? Web8?

Good find ;)

I really would've thought a press release (at least) would've slipped out of Canonical HQ given, as Computerworld say, it's already shipping on selected laptops.

seems ubuntu light wants to compete with the new splashtop

http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Splashtop-OS/

splashtop is already claiming to have shipped in more than 40 million computers.

i hope ubuntu light can become as popular;)

I'm interested! I found this thread after downloading the image and trying to run it in VMWare. It gives an error about having more than four partitions. I'd really like to try it out.

I have seen the begining of the video, the first ubuntu start and the options of the windows control panel, it looks like wubi 2.0 to me.
