Can anyone tell me what these plants are called? [plant 1] (http://www.flickr.com/photos/t0p/5171852776/) [plant 2] (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1154/5100411783_fb19c1663e_m.jpg)

Thanks, botanical buddies!! I'll name you in the photos' comments sections if you like!

X-mas cacti don't have thorns.

To the OP: Why not ask the person who took the photo? Also see http://www.ehow.com/how_6145558_identify-flowering-cactus-plants.html

I'm the person who took the photos. And the owner of the plants is as clueless as me.

Thanks for that link. I shall check it out forthwith (well, sometime in the next day or so).

You should try a Dichotomous Key.

Judging from the responses, I guess bio doesn't go with geek.

The first one seems to be a Pincushion Cactus

The second one seems to be a Christmas/Holiday cactus flower ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holiday_Cactus )

first is a cactus type .. if the leaf it is growing on flat .. most likely a prickly pear.
Second appears to be a fuchsia, but a longer distance shot is required.
