In Windows 7, one can perform the following actions in the window manager:

Maximize window (Drag titlebar to top or hit Win+<Up>)
Make window take up left half of screen (Drag titlebar to left or hit Win+<Left>)
Make window take up right half of screen (Drag titlebar to right or hit Win+<Right>)
Minimize unmaximized window (Hit Win+<Down>)
Unmaximize maximized window (Drag titlebar off top or hit Win+<Down>)

There are more, but those are the five I'm interested in. On Mac OS, there is an application called SizeUp which uses only keyboard shortcuts to perform a similar function. (It additionally has the power to quarter the screen!) Has anybody attempted to mirror this behavior, at least to some extent, in Gnome? How can it be done?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with Compiz enabled. I took a look at the Put plugin, but it doesn't seem to be able to resize the windows to half the screen. I've grown accustomed to this window management function and would be grateful for a way to implement it in Gnome. Perhaps there is an application for Gnome that implements it?

Well, you can minimize a window with Alt-F9 and you can maximize with Alt-F10.

I, too, would like some shortcuts to place windows side-by-side, though.

i don't remember the actual shortcuts but all win7 can do is possible through compiz and/or compiz plugins. just search a bit.

ofcourse you need to install the compiz configuration manager ccm.
